1. Thomas Hart - was born about 1710 and died about 1797 in Berkeley Co., Virginia .

Thomas - was among the first to settle in Berkeley Co., Va. He obtained "tomahawk rights" and build a cabin near the spring on Cabin Run in about 1730. The original settler's were mostly Germans from Lancaster Co., Penn. - so Thomas may have also come from there.

For a time the village bore the name "Pack Horse Ford", signifying the crossing of the packhorses over the Cohongorooton (Potomac), leading to the Old Pack Horse Road. The village was named Mecklenburg in 1762 - becoming the oldest town in the state of West Virginia.

Later the town was given the name Shepherdstown in honor of it's founder Thomas Shephard - in 1798.

Thomas HART was granted 5 1/2 acres on Cabin Run in 1790.

We have no record yet that John Hart was the son of Thomas - but we are supposing it is true since they seem to be the only Harts living in the area at the time.

The Virginia Tax Records of 1782 show four Harts living in Berkeley Co., Va. - Thomas Hart, Thomas Hart, Jr, James Hart and John Hart. Thomas's will was administered in 1796 by Andrew Hart. Thomas Hart, Jr. was a witness.

email from Marlow Bumpas - Dec 2006

My mother was a descendant of Deacon Stephen Hart of England and Farmington CT who had many descendants named Thomas. I notice in your "Our Folk - Hart family" web site. I see that you have come to a dead end with your Thomas Hart, b. 1710. Have you looked at the descendants of Deacon to see if there was a Thomas born that year, 1710? In my Hart line I have a Thomas born in 1714. I descend from both Deacon Stephen Hart and your John Bumpus, son of Edouad Bompasse who arrived on the Fortune in 1621, first ship after the Mayflower. He was known as Edward Bumpas in the Colonies. Marlow Bumpus

Thomas - - in 1773 "The persons appointed to view the ground for a road to lead from Rutherford's Mill to Shepherdstown leading at present from the same town towards Alexandria at or near the east part of Edward Lucas, having made their report, Ordered that the same be established and that Thomas Hart, Jr is appointed overseer of the road from Rutherford's Mill to Elk Branch"

2. John Hart - was born on 19 Apr 1742 in Berkeley Co., Va. and died on 25 Apr 1832 in Fleming Co., Ky. and was buried in Hart Cemetery, Flemingsburg, Ky. . He was the son of Thomas Hart.
John married Hannah Johns before 1770 in Berkeley County, VA. Hannah was born about 1742. She died before 1800 in Berkeley Co., VA .

Hannah - We have no information on Hannah Johns, other than that she was an Englishwoman, and from New Jersey. (Krickel Kemer Carrick, 1939.)

John - lived in Berkeley Co., Va until about 1795 when he moved to Fleming Co., Kentucky. Appears on the Berkeley County, Va. tax rolls in 1782. and Fleming Co., Ky tax rolls in 1800.

John was among the 46 signers of a "Petition of Dissenters of the Tucsarora Congregation" of Berkeley Co., Va. to the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It rejoiced "in the prospect of having their freedom maintained to them & prosperity inviolate" following the deliverance from "British oppression". It stated that "The Ecclesiastical Establishment is what your Petitioners have ever looked upon as a grievous Burden & inconsistent with the rights of Humanity wither civil or religious" and requested that it be suspended or put aside.

John and his son David are buried on a cemetery on the farm of A. J. Sloop about 4 1/2 miles from Flemingsburg, Ky. On Hussey Road. Thee farm is now owned by James and Ann Miller. When last visited in 1993, the cemetery was overgrown and for all practical purposes, inaccessible. (Albert D. Hart, Sr.,June, 2000) We have not found any record of the ancestry of John Hart, Sr., nor his whereabouts before the reference to his being on the Tax Rolls of Virginia in 1782. He also appears on the tax rolls in Fleming Co, KY. in 1800. To get from Virginia to Kentucky he possibly could have traveled over the Great Valley Road or the Pioneers Road to Western Virginia, then southwest on the Philadelphia Road, then connecting with the Shenandoah River Valley. In 1746, travelers on the Great Valley Road at Big Springs, Virginia (now Roanoke) had to leave their wagons and use pack horses to continue into the valleys of the Clinch, Powell, or Holston Rivers leading into North Carolina or Tennessee.(Albert D. Hart, Sr.,June, 2000)

Note: There is some confusion as to which David Hart is the son of John Hart and Hannah Johns. Much evidence, including conclusions made from the Hart family Cemetery Resources: hart-cemetery.htm seem to tie Matilda Kemer and David Hart to John Hart. Other evidence - such as te biography of Walter Rogers (below) seem to tie David Hart and Hannah Jones to John Hart and Hannah Johns. More notes will be added here as more evidence is discovered.

David - We have now found the proper father for Amaziah Hart (2004 ADH jr) We knew from John Hart's (b: 1742) will that he had a grandson Amaziah Hart. However, this excerpt from the History of McClean County for Walter Rogers provided the clue needed:

Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois page 2-1269

His Walter Rogers maternal grandparents were Amaziah Hart and Louisa Gooding, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Kentucky, who came to Peoria County in 1844, the wife dying in the following year and the husband in 1847.

His great-grandparents were David Hart and Hannah (Jones) Hart, the former born in the Old Dominion and dying there; but the widow, also a daughter of Virginia came to Peoria County with her son and his family and afterward removed with her grandchildren to McClean County where she died at the advanced age of ninety-four years.

Amaziah Hart and his wife, the maternal grandparents, had five sons and four daughters, and of the former John and James died as soldiers of the Civil War - John, as the result of wounds and James from disease. Louisa Gooding, the maternal grandmother, was a daughter of Abram Gooding, a native of Virginia who came to Maysville, Ky., where he spent his last days with his wife (Louisa Addison), dying in Virginia.

At the Kentucky state History Library in Frankfort, Kentucky, a file entitled “Hart”, Volume I, Compiled by Dola M. Caldwell, Kirksville, Missouri. Dola compiled her Hart family which starts with John Hart (b 1742). On one of the pages she states “this David is the son of John Hart, Dola’s ancestor, and Amaziah is David’s son). While I understand this is not proof it is the next best thing, someones ancestor.

Lenox K. Gooding was appointed guardian of James Hart at age 12 years on Feb 27th, 1847.

Black Sheep in Family?

James was probably not one of the black sheep of our family history. This article was reproduced in Prairie Roots - Winter 1987 (page 15):

"Oct 8, 1864 - James Hart of Peoria, who was hired out to go to war for William Connell, a drafted man, was shot by a sentry at Camp Butler, Springfield, when he tried to desert. Three other substitutes were shot also the same night when they tried to flee the camp. They were professional soldiers who had developed a profitible racket out of selling themselves as substitiutes for conscripted men at $1,000 for the duration of the war. After entering the service and collecting the money they deserted and hired out again under new names."

However, our information shows that our James Hart died prior to this incident, (Abram petitioned for his estate in 1863) and the Histgory of McClean Co., Illinois verifies that he died i the civil war from disease.. The 1850 Peoria Census shows another James Hart, born in 1831(3 years "older and wiser" than our James), probably the brother of Adaline Hart (born 1819), who may have been the "black sheep" of some other family.

my name is Eugene Verkaik and I am a Firefighter for the Ontario Fire Department in California. I am currently working on obtaining information about the history of the Ontario Fire Department. The goal is to document as many facts and information about those members that served before us and how we got to where we are now. Searching through the internet I came across your site when looking for William M. Hart and Milford Hart. William M. Hart was a member of our fire department in 1903 and later became our Fire Chief from 1905 to 1909. Milford Hart started out with our fire department on 8-2-1906. Mrs. Margaret Hart Drake

Mrs. Margaret Hart Drake, 86, of 2901 Pahokee Trace, died yesterday. Funeral will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Pompano City Cemetery, Pompano beach, Fla.

She was born in Peoria, Ill. and formerly lived in Miami. survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jean Vaughn, Birmingham; a son, Dr. Alan H. Drake, Ada Ohio; and a brother, Albert T. Hart, Pompano Beach, Fla.

Margaret had an earlier marriage which didn't work out and which was hushed up. "I finally learned that my mother who was quite a beautiful and virtuous young lady from a good family made the mistake of marrying what in turned out to be a real rounder. He took her to Kansas City on their "honeymoon" and left her there, high and dry. She managed to call home and get back to Peoria, but after that, she felt it necessary to leave, so she went to Chicago and got the job with IC. The funny thing is that we were close to "Uncle George and Aunt Mae" from Chicago. One or the other of them was a sibling of the loser that married my mom, but they kept up a friendship over the years. " (Alan Hart Drake 2004)

"My mother at the time [when Claude's first wife died} was doing PR work with Illinois Central and was sent down to Vincennes to see if she could aid them in any way. That is when she met my dad, and after a few years, they got married." (Alan Drake 2004) See Claude Keaton Drake family for children.

Harold Hart was the Best

The death Monday of Harold Hart a the St. Louis airport should not be dismissed with a fletting notice in the obituary page. In the area of bowling, Hart was something special.

Is there anyone in this world who can surpass Hart's record of having served as secretary of the same bowling league for an outstnding 40 years? I think not.

The Calument league of which Hart was secretary is soemthing speical too. In existance for 57 years, it is the third oldest league in the entire country...

"Their will never be another secretary like Hart", Bob Hatten, past president of the Calumet said yesterday: "He did so many extra things during the season, it's hard to remember them all. we never ceased to marvel over the information and financial reports he gave us. He was a self-appointed historian. This was the way Hart thought. He was always one step ahead of everyone else."

(Jim Obert - Peoria Journal - Oct 30, 1975)

Harold Hart and his Brother Albert Hart used to shoot pool in the Lyons Life Building at the corner of Main and Jefferson in Peoria. 22. Norwood Albert Hart - was born on 29 Jul 1920 in Peoria, Ill and died on 27 Feb 2006 in Boca Raton, Fl . He was the son of Albert Thomas Hart and Norma Elizabeth Douglass.
Norwood married Jean Young Lidster on 21 Apr 1945. Jean was born on 7 Aug 1922 in Chicago, IL. She is the daughter of Ralph Eaton Lidster and Edith Michel "Nonnie" Young.

Jean - Jean Young Lidster attended Denison and Northwestern Universities before running into an old boy- friend from Morgan Park High School, Nord Hart, on a train to work. They began dating again and were soon married. She accompanied him to his last few military posts, before returning to Chicago when she was pregnant.

Worked for her father at J. D. Neilson Leather Cut Sole before she got married.

Jean was a pianist and organist who taught many years and played in a band with Nord. She was very active in the Beverly Hills University Club which sponsored scholarships to deserving high school graduates. The club's main fund-raiser was a yearly play (mostly musicals) in which she and Nord participated heavily each year as musicians, singers, dancers, or actors. They even served a term as presidents of the club. Through their affiliation with the club and their band, they led a very active social life and made many life-long friends.

Norwood - - after graduating from Depauw University Norwood Albert Hart served as an Army officer, as a 1st Lt., towards the end of World War II, but was stateside in the food procurement field, the vocation of his father.

He was nearing the completion of an MBA from Harvard through the Army when his wife, Jean, became pregnant. He then left the Army to return to Chicago where he worked for his father about 10 years at the South Water Market as a produce wholesaler. This was mostly to aid his father in the business since his older brother, Albert D. Hart, Sr., had pursued another line of work.

Realizing that remuneration from this job was not commensurate with his educational background, he worked as a business machine salesman for many companies, including "Electrofile" and "Underwood Typewriter", and "Acme Visible Records", each being bought out by a larger company. His products were forerunners of computers, doing many of the same things databases on computers did later. The biggest problem he faced in his career was constantly competing against IBM. Eventually, he became too old in the eyes of his last employer and retired at age 53. The irony is that his father-in-law, Ralph Eaton Lidster, invested heavily in IBM during the depression. Part of the money from those investmests were what cushioned Nord's retirement years.

Nord was a musician who played saxophone and clarinet in high school and college. He later joined and often led many bands in the Chicago and South Florida areas, quitting only when macular degeneration of his eyes prevented his reading music. It was one of the greatest disappointments of his life giving up that life-long love.

Jean and Nord lived at 9646 S. Hoyne in Chicago, and then at 10120 S. Hoyne. Then they moved to Deer Creek Country CLub Blvd in Deerfield Beach, Fl.
